  • Fawn Harvesting -A Logical Alternative for Northern Range
  • : The quality of winter habitat and severity of winter weather are the most important factors regulating deer populations across much of the northern portions of the whitetail's range. This is particularly true in the Great Lakes Region north of the 43rd parallel (roughly from central New York, through northcentral Michigan, to central Wisconsin), where mild winters allow deer populations to build up to unusually high numbers, only to crash later, during the next severe winter. Such 'boom and bust' cycles probably have prevailed ever since whitetails extended their range northward behind receding glaciers. [FULL STORY]

  • Innovative Wildlife Opening Makes Young Pine Stand a Hunting Haven
  • Young pine stands often are full of whitetailed deer and other game because they produce abundant food and cover. The problem, from a deer hunting standpoint, is that deer are hard to spot, particularly on recently harvested tracts. The good news is that we have devised an innovative yet simple solution to this problema hubandspoke design that brings wildlife into clear view. This concept was developed and refined at the American Cyanamid research center in Cooksville, Mississippi. Landowners, hunters, and even many biologists tell us they have seen nothing like it‹but want to see more on other sites. [FULL STORY]

  • Burning to Better Browse
  • : "Man has come to the forest," declared Bambi's father as he smelled the smoke from the campfire that was to become a raging wildfire. The vivid imagery of this Disney cartoon is the first exposure most children have to fire and wildlife. Smokey the Bear has done an excellent job of educating the public on the dangers of wildfire. Unfortunately, the same message has usually been applied to all fires, even those that reduce the chance of wildfire and play critical roles in natural ecosystem maintenance and function. While catastrophic wildfires negatively impact people and wildlife, prescribed fires are beneficial to deer and many other native plants and animals. [FULL STORY]

  • Protecting the Playing Field
  • : Local, state, and federal officials have been setting aside monuments, parks, and refuges since the late 1800s. The first national park, Wyoming's Yellowstone, was established by Congress in 1872. The National Park Service was established in 1916. This year the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's National Wildlife Refuge System is celebrating its 100th anniversary. These publicly-owned acreages, numbering in the hundreds of millions, were set aside from development and they have played an integral role in providing habitat for a myriad of species of flora and fauna. They also have served as the playing fields of countless outdoor enthusiasts. [FULL STORY]
